In the book, Dr. Tannen argues that American discourse has become submersed with numerous conflicts and that the argument culture: moving from debate to dialogue promotes an adversarial frame of mind. The book illustrates examples of warlike metaphoric language that is heard daily. These metaphors include: the war on cancer, the war on drugs, turf battle among politicians, the battle of sexes among others (Tannen, 45). These metaphors spread through our talk and influence the way we think. The early chapters of the book focus on the media, indicating how famous programs like Crossfire knowingly and irresponsibly frame problems in terms of diametrically opposed sides. This, according to Tannen, has compromised the quality of infor mation received. In the political arena, she pin-points an increasingly warring mentality, whether during confirmation hearings, at the election period, or without more ado following the presidents State of the Union makes a speech when the response from the opposition must always be presented (Tannen, 257). Throughout the book, she shows how deeply entrenched this cultural practice is, its form, and how it directly or indirectly affects our daily lives. According to Glattenhorn (1987), by gaining increased experience in one’s teaching role they systematically gain increased experience in their professional growth through examination of their teaching ability. Professional workshops and other formally related meetings are a part of the professional development experience (Ganzer, 2000). Professional development for new and veteran teachers rests on the premise that teacher content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, or PCK (Shulman, 1986), directly and positively affects both the teachers practice and student learning. A portion of these studies contrasted the low level of teaching practices with the teaching practices of teachers who had greater understanding of math. Dietitians have an essential role in the health field to treat patients with nutrition problems such as obesity, but every patient is different and how the dietician decides the course of treatment is as well. For example, there are many ways the dietician can treat the patient like goal setting, self-monitoring, meal preparation, and other strategic plans that lead to the best health of the patient. When making a plan to treat the patient many detailed factors come into play. For example, patients age, occupation, family history, and most importantly social environment. Planning was important for identifying goal and determining the most important action[1]. I had planned to fix his salary irrespective of his working hours. I informed that he would be paid $120 henceforth. For organising skill employees must be designated specific task that requires particular skill sets to accomplish. To make Harry more organised, I had set up a board that recorded Harrys hours of work. Based on regular interaction with Harry, I learned that he did not like working till 1 am at night. I have approached Harry to complete his work 30 minutes earlier. Leading and Controlling is an important management function to set performance standards[2]. After one month, I noticed that he was usually leaving the restaurant by 12:40. To motivate harry, I had promised to allow him to go out for party with co-workers. Motivation is an effective leadership skill in management[3]. On personal inspection, my father noticed that the kitchen was clean and Harry never compromised on quality of his work. He was always ready to clean dishes, sooner the customer left. He appeared to be more professional than before. After another two weeks he was found to leave by 12:15. Critical evaluation The POLC framework is effective in problem solving. Based on analysis of the incidence described above, I believe solving a problem creatively is the primary role of manager. The strategy of setting goals for Harry was effective as per the goal setting theory by Locke and Latham[4]. He worked late till night 1 am. On asking him to leave on time, he managed to leave by 12:40 and then managed to finish by 12:15. Restricting the salary and time, made Harry more efficient in working. I believe my strategy to record Harrys time on the notice board was effective as per the Hawthorne effect. As per this theory, employee when receives increased attention, is motivated to work harder[5]. Harry was motivated and excited to leave on time as I promised him to party one day after achievement of his goals. It is effective strategy as per expectancy theory that states the employee deliver hard work in expectation of the valued outcome[6]. Other strategies could have been used such as offering books and employee of month awards to motivate Harry. It would have been effective as he could not complete his studies. Job rotation or incentives based on number of dishes washed may also have increased his performance and skills.
